Small Farmer Supporting – Direct Purchase of Agricultural Products

Internal Group Purchase

GIGABYTE began promoting group purchases of fish, agricultural and livestock products direct from the producer in 2002. For the past 22 years, charity direct sales, pre-typhoon emergency harvest, sales coordination for bumper crops, local production, and organic crops were used to help farmers and fishermen against exploitative channels and increase product value. GIGABYTE employees were able to purchase “fresh and healthy fruits and vegetables, fishing catches, and agricultural livestock projects. NT$60.8 million in group purchases in 2024 compared to the NT$40.67 million accumulated over the years.

Corporate Co-marketing

Besides, when bumper crops or sluggish sales of agricultural products due to changing trade conditions occur and lead to an imbalance between supply and demand, GIGABYTE often partners with nearby businesses and charities to make bulk purchases in order to avoid waste and help the farmers as well. The agricultural products are then distributed to employees, suppliers, as well as local communities. Through promoting local agriculture and quality farm produce of Taiwan, GIGABYTE hopes not only to make new friends but also to help farmers pass through difficult times.

Main Accomplishments of Co-Marketing Over the Years

1,200 kg of vegetables

he Hualien earthquake on April 3, 2024, led to tunnel collapses that cut off major access roads. Chayote shoots grown in Hualien’s Ji-an Township were in season at the time and sales to northern Taiwan were badly affected by transportation difficulties. To support local farmers, GIGABYTE Chairman Dandy Yeh purchased 1,200 kg of vegetables that were distributed among all employees at GIGABYTE Business Headquarters, Nanping Plant and Innovation City offices. This helped support Ji-an farmers affected by the earthquake and provided employees with healthy food.

3,000 kg of Onions

2024 was a good year for rain and wind. Agriculture and Food Agency statistics showed that “Onion production is 34% higher than last year and 39% higher than standard years” so the Taiwanese people were encouraged to purchase more locally-grown onions. Mr. Ming-Hsiung Liu, the GIGABYTE Vice-Chairman at the time, purchased 3000 kg of onions to help farmers and avoid waste.

394 Boxes / Approx. 1,200 kg of Pineapples and Sugar Apples

Taiwanʼs excellent weather this year produced a bumper crop of Atemoya. Farmers were faced with a drop in prices due to the lack of export markets. GIGABYTE Vice Chairman and Mingwei Foundation Founder, Mr. Ming-hsiung Liu, decided to help farmers and avoid wasting food by ordering 394 boxes (approx. 3,900 pcs) of Atemoya fruit directly from local growers in Taitung. In addition, 190 6-kg boxes and 20 3-kg boxes of Atemoya were sold following the strong echoes from employees. GIGABYTE took action to support Taiwanese agriculture and local farmers!

2,295 kg of Bananas

A hot summer this year meant bananas grew faster and there was a glut in the domestic banana market. The Agriculture and Food Agency responded by purchasing green bananas from growers at a price of 5 NTD/kg. To help farmers and avoid waste, Mr. Ming-hsiung Liu, CEO of GIGABYTE Education Foundation and founder of Mingwei Foundation, purchased 2,295 kg of bananas and shared them with GIGABYTE employees in Xindian, Nanping, and GIGABYTEʼs subsidiaries. Bananas were also given to neighboring organizations and couriers to encourage everyone to feast on great-tasting fruit when in season and support Taiwanese agricultural produce!

185 Boxes / Approx. 900 kg of Mango

July is the season for Yujing mangoes. Farmers were expecting a bountiful harvest after a yearʼs hard work but COVID-19ʼs impact on export orders and tourism led to a local glut. GIGABYTE Education Foundation supported Qian Qian Fruit Orchard in Yujing, Tainan, by ordering 900 kg of mangoes and sharing them with employees in 2021. An internal group purchase with home delivery was also held, with 185 boxes of mangoes ordered in an enthusiastic show of support for local agriculture.

200 Boxes / Approx. 3.6 Metric Tons of Limes

July is the lime season but bumper crops in the summers of 2019 and 2020 all led to a collapse in producer prices. GIGABYTE answered the call from the Agriculture and Food Agency by placing bulk orders for quality limes from Pingtung. The AORUS statue in the main lobby of GIGABYTE headquarters ended up surrounded by gleaming, fragrant green limes, filling passing employees with expectation. Every employee received 5 to 6 fresh limes to help their appetites beat the summer heat!

1,490 Boxes / Approx. 31.5 Metric Tons of Cabbages

Cabbage farmers re-planted too much cabbage after typhoon damage in 2017 so market prices collapsed. A bumper crop in 2018 created a glut in the market as well. On both occasions, GIGABYTE hosted cabbage bonanza events and bulk orders were placed through the GIGABYTE Education Foundation. The cabbages were then distributed to employees, the local police station, and other agencies. Employees were also encouraged to eat more vegetables for their health!

608 Boxes / Approx. 9.06 Metric Tons of Banana

The high banana prices in the previous year led to banana growers planting more banana trees and agricultural agencies began warning of a glut in 2017. GIGABYTE responded by joining the “Banana Carnival” campaign launched by the Social Enterprise faculty at Fu Jen Catholic University in June to help stabilized banana prices through pre-orders, and to avoid panic sellers. This would hopefully protect farmers and consumers alike.

In November, GIGABYTE mobilized other companies such as AAEON and Innodisk along with charity foundations to co-market bananas from Minjian, Nantou. Participating companies and suppliers all “showed off their bananas” on social media to express their appreciation and gratitude for the donated fruit.
